To be honest I had no idea what graphic design was when I declared it as my major. I just googled what art related major made the most money and went from there. Yet during those aimless high school years, I always had a passion for design despite not knowing it.
I also have a great deal of love for music. I love making playlists for every occasion, which lead me to designing covers for each of them. They were crudely done on my phone but I had a lot of fun. It was in my sophomore year art class that I can distinctly remember changing everything for me. We had a project to design a logo for a fictional company andI loved doing thumbnail sketches, figuring out proper scale, and learning about logo design philosophies. I didn’t know that I was doing graphic design, but I did know that it felt right to me.
I knew that I wanted to get into a creative field when I got out of high school and I knew that I wanted to do something I was passionate about, so I took a chance on Graphic Design and fell in love on my first day at college. They say that the two most important days in your life are the day that you’re born and the day you find out why, and as corny as it is to say but that day I really did find out why.
My passion and drive for design has only grown exponentially since then. As a bi-guy as well as a first generation college student with filipino parents, I’m always trying to push things further and better, not just in design but through it. During my design journey, I’ve worked with companies promoting diversity in the creative space by creating marketing materials in order to highlight various underrepresented communities in the entertainment landscape. All while still finding the time to stay up at 3 in the morning designing covers for my Spotify playlists until my laptop dies.
